Pests Preparing for Winter: The Original Preppers

As the weather cools and fall leaves cover the ground, humans start pulling out sweaters, stocking up on hot cocoa, and making plans for cozy nights in. But guess what? You’re not the only one preparing for winter.
Bugs and rodents have been “prepping” since before it was cool. In fact, pests might be the original survivalists. The problem is—they’re prepping inside your home.
What Are Pests Prepping For?
When temperatures drop, pests start looking for two things:
Food – Your pantry, crumbs, or that forgotten Halloween candy.
Shelter – Anywhere warm, dry, and safe (translation: your walls, attic, or basement).
It’s basically their version of a bug-out bag… except their bag is your kitchen.

The Prepper Lineup
Mice: Masters of sneaking indoors to build nests from insulation, paper, or anything soft.
Ants: On a mission to stockpile crumbs like they’re running a Costco.
Spiders: Setting up in corners and basements, spinning silken “sleeping bags.”
Cockroaches: The worst preppers of all—stockpiling crumbs like there’s an apocalypse coming.
Squirrels: Okay, they get a pass because they’re cute, but that doesn’t mean they won’t chew on your attic wires.
How to Stop the Bugged-Out Prepper Movement
Seal Entry Points: Gaps under doors and around windows are like welcome mats.
Declutter: Piles of boxes or papers = prime real estate for pests.
Food Patrol: Keep snacks in sealed containers and wipe up spills right away.
Professional Help: If the pest-preppers are too organized, it’s time to call us.
Bottom Line
Pests might be nature’s original preppers, but that doesn’t mean they should stockpile inside your home. With a little preven
tion—and a call to Dave’s Pest Control—you can keep your winter cozy, crumb-free, and pest-free.
